Out to Eat: The Universal & Dongbei

The Universal

Working at an office building located a bit out of town makes it hard to go out for lunch. So instead of trying to get everyone out of the office for lunch, my work team decided to meet for a breakfast on the town to celebrate a colleague’s birthday. I can’t think of a better way to start a Friday! We selected The Universal, a delightful breakfast and lunch spot located a bit off the beaten path. They are known for their grits and feature a different version of the dish daily. Unfortunately, the grits of the day on my visit involved an entire lamb chop. It seemed like a bit much for 8 a.m. I choose the Huevos Rancheros, top left in the photo, served with corn bread instead of tortillas. It was incredible. I highly recommend the dish. I managed to lick my plate clean!

Dongbei

One of my favorite places to eat for lunch when we have a big group is Dongbei. That is not the actual name of the restaurant but the type of food they serve. Actually I don’t even know the name of the restaurant, but if I say Dongbei then everyone will know what I’m talking about.

Dongbei is the east (dong) and north (bei) part of China and the food from here is hearty and delicious. It is served in a traditional Chinese style, the dishes in the middle, a lazy Susan if there’s a big enough group and everyone helping themselves. From dumplings to tofu to ‘smashed chicken’ (a whole fried chicken) you can’t go wrong at Dongbei!
